Talent vs Narrative: PR Is Defining the Future of Football

The discussion surrounding players in modern football is no longer performance based. Rather, perception, which is influenced by media reporting, club branding and online platforms, is equally significant in influencing the valuation of players. This is especially clear when contrasting Lamine Yamal and Michael Olise who are sometimes addressed in terms of very different perspectives although they deliver similar levels of performance.

The ascendancy of Yamal has been nothing less than fast. He is one of the most discussed young players in the world and has emerged as such out of FC Barcelona. The media coverage on him has risen above admiration and even certain media outlets have already cast doubt on whether he can be regarded as one of the best players in the world (Butler, 2025). Although his performances warrant much attention, the magnitude of the hype is indicative of more than what transpires on the field.

This is contributed by the global influence that Barcelona has. Being one of the most recognisable football clubs, it offers unrivalled visibility platform. All activities of a Barcelona player are magnified through international media networks and social networks. This implies that the highlights of Yamal, his instances of ability, and even his routine input are always relayed to a global audience. In this regard, his reputation is enhanced by both performance and positioning in a strong footballing brand.

In contrast, Michael Olise has developed his reputation in a more limited media environment. His performances have not attracted the same kind of attention in the world as he has shown high standards of technical skills and creativity. The review of the recent games indicates that both the players have been performing impactful roles as they are regularly featured in weekly performance shows (Flashscore, 2026). Nevertheless, the manner in which these performances are addressed varies greatly.

Critics have gone to the extent of saying that the productivity of Olise makes him one of the most efficient wide players in Europe, dispelling the notion that players with more media publicity must be more productive (Schnitzel01, 2026). In the same vein, comparative analysis has positioned the debate as a battle of reliability and talent; that both players present different, yet equally, valuable qualities (Gómez, 2026). Nonetheless, Yamal is still the centre of the global discourse, whereas Olise acts more or less in the shadows.

This difference highlights the growing importance of media framing in football. The media and online platforms are not just reporting on performances, but create stories. Players with big clubs or interesting stories are people that are more likely to be well covered. Yamal conforms to an established discourse of Barcelona as a place of producing world-class talent, which is easier to market and sell.

This imbalance is strengthened by digital platforms. The focus of short-form content, including highlight clips and social media posts, is on high-visibility players. The more Yamal is present the more his content is recommended to more people, forming a loop where attention begets attention. Conversely, other players such as Olise, who are not involved in this first spot, have a harder time attaining such exposure.

It has some identity and anticipation as well. Yamal is the extension of an existing footballing tradition, so audiences can easily relate to his story. Olise, as equally gifted, is not blessed with the same degree of narrative familiarity. This shows that perception in football is not only affected by performance, but also by the context and storytelling.

It is however noteworthy that PR and media coverage do not substitute performance-they just make it more visible. Long term recognition is only possible by continued success on the field. What PR and media do is to make the process faster, in how fast and how popular a player becomes recognized.

The other aspect of modern football to consider is the way the fans interact with it. Online interactions are fuelling more and more debate, in which exposure is sometimes more important than critical analysis. Players that feature more often in the content streams will be rated as more elite, whether their performances are of high quality or not. This is an indication of a wider change in sports marketing where perception is based on the engagement metrics.

To sum up, the comparison of Lamine Yamal and Michael Olise shows that ability is not the only factor which shapes modern football. The role of the perception of players is played by media stories, branding of the club, or digital platforms. Although talent is the key to success, visibility is a multiplier. Being elite in the current game is not merely a matter of how the player performs well, it is also what how well the story is told.
